As you will hear in our opening sermon series when it is up on this site, Jesus was about fixing the mess we had made of his world, in making all things right again. Jesus’ mission is very simply is stated in 1 John 3:8 “The reason the Son of God appeared, was to destroy the works of the Devil”. This includes the destruction of human sin, sickness, sadness, mourning, crying and pain and everything evil that has happened to humanity and the world.
As St. John also states in the book of Revelation, which helps us imagine so vividly, at the return of Jesus to this world the second time, he will bring about literally, what his first coming – His incarnation (birth into human flesh as God and man), his faithful life as the new and last Adam, his declaration and works of the Kingdom of God (sampled in his miraculous deeds), his cosmic sin and satanic dominion-destroying crucifixion, his physical resurrection and ascension to the right hand of God the Father, with God the Holy Spirit – The victory Jesus actually accomplished way back in the first century made possible: The news the Church is supposed to be passionately and urgently spreading now.
Here is what Jesus tells John to write down about that new world Jesus will physically bring about at his return:
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem [representing God’s recreated world], coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband; and I heard a great voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away. And he who sat upon the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new” (Revelation 21:3-5 RSV)
